Why We Still Ask You to Write Your Seed Phrase on Paper First

When someone sits down for a wallet setup session at our Berryknowes Avenue studio, the first physical object on the table is a plain index card and a pen with archival ink. Not because we reject technology — we work with Solana every week — but because the moment you generate a recovery phrase, your brain is processing twelve or twenty-four unfamiliar words while also navigating a new app interface.

Paper removes one layer of complexity. There is no clipboard history, no cloud sync, no screenshot habit to fight. We ask participants to write each word in order, speak it aloud, and then read the card back to themselves before any digital backup is discussed.

The exercise also reveals handwriting quirks that cause future problems. A lowercase L mistaken for a one, or a word split across two lines, can make recovery stressful years later. Catching that in the room saves hours of guesswork.

After the paper copy is verified, we talk about metal plates, fireproof bags, and geographic separation. Those options come second because they depend on understanding what you are protecting in the first place.

If you are preparing for a session, bring reading glasses if you use them, and choose a pen you actually like writing with. Small comforts reduce the rush, and rushing is the enemy of self-custody.
